Become Money Savvy with The Mint

Do you have what it takes to start your own business? Do you know how banks work? Will you ever be a millionaire? What exactly is the stock market? What should you know about credit cards? What are starting salaries for different occupations?

You can find answers to these questions and more at TheMint.org The Northwestern Mutual Foundation, the charitable arm of Northwestern Mutual, partnered with the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) in the redesign of TheMint.org, to emphasize personal financial literacy. First developed in 1997, the Web site now provides more tools to help parents as well as educators teach children about sound money management and establish good money habits at home.

The Mint

The site is divided into five main sections based on things you can do with money: Earn it. Save it. Spend it. Track it. Invest it. This site has been designed primarily for families—to help them work together and approach the topic of handling money wisely.

There are also sections aimed exclusively at adults: teachers and parents.

Ideas for Teachers contains supplemental activities to illustrate sound money management concepts.
Pointers for Parents provides tips for mentoring and nurturing in children financial responsibility.
Ideas for Young Kids gives you tips to start this important message early, even before your children start grade school.

You can take the Credit Card Challenge. Check out what it would cost you to live in your own apartment. Discover how interest can double your money. Practice working with a checkbook. See what happens to a paycheck once things called deductions take a bit out of it.
